Once you’ve made the decision to commission a newborn portrait, you can relax and let Clare take it from there. Just as no two newborns are alike, neither are any two images. Clare will discuss your many options, talk to you about what you want out of your session, and do everything possible to prepare you both emotionally and practically.
Family Image Backgrounds and Clothing Suggestions
The Simple Session includes a white background for the family images. This lovely, soft background color works well with very pale or white colored clothing. Keep the look simple and classic so as not to distract from the baby or your expressions. For the fathers Clare suggests long sleeves, it can be a shirt or something more casual like a long sleeve t shirt. For the mothers Clare suggests either long sleeves, 3/4 length sleeves or no sleeves.
The Pure Session gives you the choice of either the white background mentioned above or a black background. The black background is a little more dramatic and traditional. For the black background, Clare recommends black long sleeved clothing, 3/4 length sleeves are okay for Mom and Dad can roll his up for a more casual look. Keep the necklines simple.
The baby doesn’t need any clothing for the session, there are some really sweet knit pant options at the studio if you’d like the baby wearing something. By all means bring something along and we can see if it will work for the session. Tip: newborns are small so bring something that is fitted not something that they will grow into. Since they don’t have obvious necks, anything that is large on them ends up covering their face.
Once you arrive at the studio, Clare will sit down with both parents to review the plans, fine-tune the details, go over the blanket and prop options and make any necessary adjustments. Clare recommends choosing two neutral colored blankets from her selection and adding color with the different colored wraps, hats and headbands. Do you prefer the cooler neutrals like whites and grays or the warmer neutrals like creams and browns? Where might you be displaying the images? you might like to incorporate colors that will work well with that décor.
Then it begins.
For a few hours, someone else is as invested in your baby – as you are. Clare’s single minded focus during the session is on capturing exactly how you look, feel and exist in this moment. She wants you to be able to look back in a year – in ten years, in thirty years – and remember – yes! Things sure have changed, but that’s exactly how it was.
Session times will vary depending on the session that you choose.
Newborn sessions work best within the 5 to 10 days, when babies still curl up like they did in the womb, sleep much of the time, and don’t move very much.
About ten days after your portrait session you will receive a link to your online image gallery where you can choose the combination of images you’d like to add to the digital package of your choice. The hardest part? Deciding which photos you won’t purchase.
If you’d prefer more attention and help with your selection, you can have an in person viewing session at the studio with Clare. Clare will show you various options for cropping, retouching, enhancement, finishings and framing as well as helping you narrow down your selection to fit your budget. Another benefit of the in person viewing sessions is that Clare can help create groupings of canvases or framed images for you to display on your walls. In fact, if you email an image of the wall where you plan to display your portrait, she can even show you how it will look! Realizing that everyone in NYC leads busy lives and newborn babies certainly take up a lot of time, Clare also offers these personalized viewing sessions online using Skype.
With Clare’s easy guidance you’ll leave your viewing confident that you’ve ordered those images that truly capture the moments you’ll most want to remember – those that make you feel exactly the way you did when they were taken.
Your digital files will be ready 2-3 weeks once you have placed your order. All images ordered include basic retouching and image enhancement, such as correct minor blemishes, under eye circles, post partum belly reduction. If you’d like more dramatic retouching such as substantial weight loss, hair replacement etc, it is available for an additional fee. All digital files will be uploaded to a service like Dropbox in three different formats: High resolution files for printing prints 8×10 and larger. Medium resolution files for printing prints 5×7 and smaller and are perfect for sharing with family and friends as well as for uploading to sites such as Tiny Prints and Minted. And low resolution files formatted and watermarked for use on Social Media.
